Fueling the Fun

Canister Systems

All venting on the tank goes through the canister, so the only time the system is actually open to atmosphere without filtering is during the tank filling event.

Diurnal Canister System

Advantages of the carbon canister:

  • Fuel is never under pressure.
  • Comfort factor: similar systems have been used in automotive systems for decades.

Disadvantages:

  • Carbon canisters require venting from the canister to the outside of the boat. The vent extends through the hull and terminates with a P-trap mounted at the through-hole.
  • Long lengths of hose may be required, and all outbound vents must go through the canister
  • The carbon canister may clog or become contaminated, and it must be protected from water or other fluids.
  • The system must incorporate design features to prevent liquid gasoline from reaching the canister during refueling or as a result of fuel sloshing,  expansion or severe tip angles of the boat.
